I noticed on facebook the other day that my sister and brother-in-law are in the market for a "late model or new" van. I also know that my daughter has also hinted on occasion that she would like something different then the car she is currently driving (as dependable as it has been). When my wife and I decided to become debt free 10 yrs or so ago, we made a commitment never to always pay cash for a car.... and to always buy used. We found a reputable dealer in this area who stands behind the cars he sells and really haven't had any more problems with our used cars then we have had when we have purchased new.
I know Dave Ramsey talks about this as well and found a terrific video that I hope you will take the time to watch. He calls it "Free Cars for Life". As you will see in the video, the idea is to make car payments to yourself rather then the bank, all the while, saving up for a good dependable, used car. After all, what is a car other then a vehicle to get you safely from one point to another. One caveat about the video: focus on the concept, not on the numbers. It would be wonderful if you can get 12% on a mutual fund in today's economic environment but regardless of the numbers, the concept as a whole is sound.

We have paid cash for our last two vehicles. It is a great feeling to know that God has blessed to a point that we can save up for such large purchased. It is also fun to watch the salesman try to shake me from my price.
You can state a number and not allow guilt pull you from your price. It is great to win.
